I couldn’t be happier with the first three songs from the new record. (I’m writing on the third day of the slow reveal.) What a joy to listen to someone who still cares about songwriting excellence. I also have to say that I’m a little surprised by how accessible these songs are. The last album (Lie) was really quite edgy, with a lot of abrasiveness mixed in with the beauty. It was Ed at his most Tom Waits-like. I loved it. But I’m also enjoying the more welcoming sound. And the production this time around also sounds very warm, rich, and inviting. I can’t wait to hear the rest!

With “Heart of a Wolf” things got a little edgier, with a dark minor-key melody and piano figure, but the chorus is in a major key and catchy as hell. “Do As I Say” is also filled with hooks. And then things really get interesting. The solo acoustic version of “Killed by the Morning Sun” was lovely, but the studio version is simply stunning. A beautiful, delicate, wistfully romantic arrangement. And then “Lachrymosity”: wow. Classic Ed: theatrical, unpredictable melody and baroque arrangement. I especially love the “bridge,” if that’s what it is, in the middle of the song. Four more songs to go, and not a bum track yet. I’m delighted. Anyone else in the world enjoying this as much as I am?

    WOW!!Loving these beautiful new songs!
I am a die hard Here Be Monsters girl, but Lustre is my new addiction, it is filled with Classic Ed Emotion and Lyrics. My two toddlers love them also! Very generous of you and thanks for the fix of a song a day ;-)
Looking forward to enjoying the songs live in May, every gig has so far been pure enjoyment!

I cannot get enough of this album and it hasn’t even been released yet! I have to keep coming back to the music page every few hours to listen to them all again. Nice to hear the polished and final versions of a few of the tracks we heard at the Union Chapel gig last year. Brilliant stuff as always, Mr. Ed.

A truly wonderful collection of songs so far. Each day I half-expect a duff/filler track to come along but it does not. The textures, layers, immediacy and soulfulness of each song is amazing … Church Of No Religion is my fave today!
So good of you to share prior to official release. I’m grateful for the chance to get really familiar with the new material prior to The Pigalle.
Sincere best wishes for the upcoming release and gigs. Hopefully in time many more ears get to enjoy this stuff and you get the credit due.

All the songs are really great, I can’t stop listening to Lachrymosity and to A Secret Society, and to Haywired… And to Do as I say not as I do… And to the Heart of a Wolf… Ok I can’t stop listening to any of them actually, can’t wait to have the album :) :)

HURRAH!!! Lachrymosity made the cut : ) I’ve been hearing you do that live for ages and always hoped it would make the album. Ed this record is a beaut, I’ve just had my brother order the two disc for me as a birthday gift. It was a sweet coincidence it went out on pre-order the day before. Good luck with this one, love.. x x

I knew Ed’s music because Jamie Cullum tweeted it a few days ago, and know I love it. I think the perfect word to describe it is: beautiful, the music, the lyrics, even the art of the album. I can’t wait to get my copy, I’m a fan since now.

Dear Ed, I’m from canada. I have a dear friend who’s a single mother from sweden with a 1 year old darling baby. The man who was her boyfriend fell into drunken rages and would beat me and hurt their child. She finally got away from him and found work at the post office in vasteras. Through this difficult time your songs helped her to not kill herself or give up, and to always try to be the best mother she could be. I remember when I first heard, god protect your soul, many years ago. It was jessica who told me about you and ever since we have been eagerly awaiting each new release from you.

I was happy to see you collaborate with ron sexsmith. We hope your paths will cross with finn andrews or bernard butler next one day? I still remember fondly those days when I met the true love of my life, she’s the one I let slip through my fingers. I wanted to give you this song (follow the website link) jessica wrote for me about those memories we first shared when we heard your music and to thank you for the hope your music has given to my dear friend and I.

    cheers
    dav
